IIT KHARAGPUR

INDIAN INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY, KGP MAIN BUILDING
INDIAN INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY , KHARAGPUR (Kgp) is the oldest IIT established in 1959.It has its huge campus of 2100 acres and offers one of the best engineering courses in the country. IIT KGP being the oldest iit is designated as" DEDICATED TO THE SERVICE OF NATION".It is believed to have one of the largest technical libraries of Asia. As most of you know that the programs offered by iits are comletely residential in nature and so they provide hostel facilities for boys and girls seperately ( very unjust).
Apart from the hectic schedule of academics students also get some pleasure of recreation. Now this something which iit life is worth living for. The inter-deparmets or inter hostels  competetion are held annually and the running is awarded to the winning side. There are 18 boys hostel in KGP and just 2 girls hostel!! (only certain girls make it to the iits which are non- males according to iit boys nomenclature).
One of my friend (pursuing industrial in KGP) told be about last year inter hostel competition that when boys students of some hostel perform, only the residents of the hostel cheer them up and rest stay quiet as dead but when it comes the girl chance the whole crowd of the institute growl like if is was the last day of thier lives.Yes the life of an iitian is quiet tough but it has its own advantage and these celebrations make it really enthusiastic for them.

Apart from the inter-iits or inter-hostels, IIT KGP organizes two festival namely KSHITIJ  and SPRINGFEST being technical and cultural festival respectively.KGP also organizes ILLUMINATION called as ILLU, during the eve of DIWALI.

SPRING FEST, popularly known as SF, the annual social and cultural festival, is held in January. The Spring Fest is held for 4 nights and 3 days on the weekend closest to 26 January. Spring Fest includes cultural competitions in addition to stage shows (known as Star-nights) by singers and performers such as K.K.PritamKailash KherShaan, Breathe, Parikrama etc. The event attracts participation from colleges across India.

Kshitij is the annual techno-management fest. It is the biggest techno-management festival of Asia with a total budget of more than 1.5 crore and a total prize money of Rs 50 lakh. An annual techno-management festival organised in January or February, it receives participation from foreign universities as well. Events include technical workshops, seminars, and competitions. The events organised in Kshitij belong to various genres like coding, quizzing, debating, robotics and marketing. Apart from the events, Kshitij has taken the initiative to reach out to the students of rural India, giving a new direction and orientation to their learning.

llumination, known as Illu, is a festival unique to IIT Kharagpur. It is inspired from the day of Diwali (the festival of lights) and is usually held on the day of Diwali itself. It is held as a competition among student halls. As part of the Illumination festival, all halls build vertical panels of bamboo (called Chatais) on which thousands of lamps (diyas) are mounted forming outlines of people or things; illustrating an event, or a place of importance. The chatais may reach a height of 6 metres (20 ft), with nearly 20,000 lighted lamps. The lamps on the chatais are lighted with all other light sources switched off, to showcase the art-panels made by the flickering lamps. On the same day as Illumination, the Rangoli Competition is organised as an inter-hall event. Rangolis of exquisite detail and shading—measuring around 3.5 by 3.5 metres (11 by 11 ft) —are constructed using coloured powders, crushed bangles, and pebbles. Interplay of light and shadow and ambient music are part of the display.

Robotix, the annual robotics competition held by IIT Kharagpur, is organised during Kshitij. IIT Kharagpur organises a annual inter-collegiate sports and games meet known as Shaurya. It is held in the autumn semester in October. Events include cricket, hockey, volleyball, basketball, badminton, table tennis, lawn tennis and aquatics.
