This year the great fall is seen for electrical and mechanical engineering.Nevertheless all other branches are great and IIT KGP proved to be the mighty institute of engineering. So if any of you is interested in the opening and closing ranks of IIT KHARAGPUR, here are they.In case any of you is interested in opening and closing ranks of JEE 2010, click here

IIT KHARAGPUR GIVING ADMISSION TO STAFF CHILDREN ILLEGALLY

The best engineering institute in our country has a dirty secret. The Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur was secretly and illegally keeping aside a discretionary admission quota for children of its professors and staff members for over four decades, admitting dozens of students even though they had not fared well in the IIT-Joint Entrance.
This discovery was made by Hindustan Times after accessing certain documents using the RTI Act which showed that the countrys oldest IIT " started in 1951"  blocked 25 per cent of its seats in popular five-year integrated science courses (up to M.Sc level) for handpicked nominees, even asIIT aspirants had to struggle to clear the IIT-JEE for admission.
Other things which came to light were that those who got admission under this quota between 2003 and 2005 did not even need to appear for the entrance exam.
However, due to pressure the Joint Admission Board of all IITs, which organises entrance examination, and the launch of RTI Act, this illegal quota got abandoned.
As per a report in Hindustan Times, the documents revealed that this premier institute admitted 88 students through the secret quota between 1998 and 2005, including 50 in 2003 and 2004. The quota was never revealed in admission brochures unlike all other reservations for backward communities that the IITs have.
Describing it as the most shameful chapter in the history of IITs, a former IIT Kharagpur director said, "I knew about the existence of this practice and tried convincing colleagues to end the quota, but failed."
People like Director of IIT Bhubaneswar and the organising chairman of the IIT-JEE in 2006 have benefited from this quota.

ILLUMINATION

Illumination, popularly known as Illu, is a festival unique to IIT Kharagpur. It is inspired from the day of Diwali (the festival of lights) and is usually held on the day of Diwali itself. It is held as a competition among student halls. As part of the Illumination festival, all halls build vertical panels of bamboo (called Chatais) on which thousands of lamps (diyas) are mounted forming outlines of people or things; illustrating an event, or a place of importance. The chatais may reach a height of 6 metres (20 ft), with nearly 20,000 lighted lamps. The lamps on the chatais are lighted with all other light sources switched off, to showcase the art-panels made by the flickering lamps. On the same day as Illumination, the Rangoli Competition is organised as an inter-hall event. Rangolis of exquisite detail and shading—measuring around 3.5 by 3.5 metres (11 by 11 ft) —are constructed using coloured powders, crushed bangles, and pebbles. Interplay of light and shadow and ambient music are part of the display.

ILLUMINATION CONTEST

The inter-hall illumination contest is held every year on Diwali, the festival of lights. Generally, all the hostels participate in the event. A lot of preparation goes into this event. The idea is to decorate the hall with oil lamps by placing them on wire grids and hanging them from supports so as to create intricate patterns of lights dancing in mid-air.
The designs are usually finalised about ten days before Diwali. The work then starts and a large percentage of the hall's population turns up to put in their bit. The work involves tying wire around diyas (earthen oil lamps) so that they may be hung from grids, placing these diyas on grids and finally filling them with oil. The whole episode of lighting the diyas lasts about ten minutes but the sight is so spectacular and rewarding that it condones all the hard work and considerable amount of money that goes into the effort. The winning hall gets a huge pot of rasgullas (milk dumplings in sugar syrup) to celebrate. After the rasgullas are eaten, the remaining syrup is poured over the unsuspecting hall president's head.
In the pictures you see front views of Azad Hall (Thanks: Vijay Jayachandran) and Patel hall (Thanks: Rajat Bhargava) during illumination and a photograph of the rangoli. Other halls are similarly decked up on this occasion.

IIT KHARAGPUR

INDIAN INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY, KGP MAIN BUILDING
INDIAN INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY , KHARAGPUR (Kgp) is the oldest IIT established in 1959.It has its huge campus of 2100 acres and offers one of the best engineering courses in the country. IIT KGP being the oldest iit is designated as" DEDICATED TO THE SERVICE OF NATION".It is believed to have one of the largest technical libraries of Asia. As most of you know that the programs offered by iits are comletely residential in nature and so they provide hostel facilities for boys and girls seperately ( very unjust).
Apart from the hectic schedule of academics students also get some pleasure of recreation. Now this something which iit life is worth living for. The inter-deparmets or inter hostels  competetion are held annually and the running is awarded to the winning side. There are 18 boys hostel in KGP and just 2 girls hostel!! (only certain girls make it to the iits which are non- males according to iit boys nomenclature).
One of my friend (pursuing industrial in KGP) told be about last year inter hostel competition that when boys students of some hostel perform, only the residents of the hostel cheer them up and rest stay quiet as dead but when it comes the girl chance the whole crowd of the institute growl like if is was the last day of thier lives.Yes the life of an iitian is quiet tough but it has its own advantage and these celebrations make it really enthusiastic for them.

Apart from the inter-iits or inter-hostels, IIT KGP organizes two festival namely KSHITIJ  and SPRINGFEST being technical and cultural festival respectively.KGP also organizes ILLUMINATION called as ILLU, during the eve of DIWALI.

SPRING FEST, popularly known as SF, the annual social and cultural festival, is held in January. The Spring Fest is held for 4 nights and 3 days on the weekend closest to 26 January. Spring Fest includes cultural competitions in addition to stage shows (known as Star-nights) by singers and performers such as K.K.PritamKailash KherShaan, Breathe, Parikrama etc. The event attracts participation from colleges across India.

Kshitij is the annual techno-management fest. It is the biggest techno-management festival of Asia with a total budget of more than 1.5 crore and a total prize money of Rs 50 lakh. An annual techno-management festival organised in January or February, it receives participation from foreign universities as well. Events include technical workshops, seminars, and competitions. The events organised in Kshitij belong to various genres like coding, quizzing, debating, robotics and marketing. Apart from the events, Kshitij has taken the initiative to reach out to the students of rural India, giving a new direction and orientation to their learning.
